Garage Door Types Explained

June 22, 2022

There are a number of different types of garage doors to choose from and it's important to know what these are so you select the right one for your property. When you are finding a new garage door for your property, think about how much space you have, what features you are looking for and how secure your garage needs to be. If you're storing tools, a vehicle or converting your garage, you'll need a door that's secure and takes up as little space as possible.

Roller Doors

Roller doors, which open upwards (with the garage door curtain rolling upwards and around a cylinder), are one of the most popular types of garage doors in Australia. Many people choose roller garage doors  because they take up less space, can be automatic or manual and are incredibly secure. Roller garage doors can be used on both commercial and domestic properties and are usually made out of steel which can be painted or treated for extra durability.

Counterweight Garage Doors

Tilting counterweight doors are single panels which swing open. These types of garage doors need enough room to operate but can look great in a period home. This is a more old-fashioned style of garage door which has a pivoting hinge mechanism rather than tracking. When the door is open, it pivots towards the ceiling and the panel is held overhead inside the garage.

Sectional Garage Doors

Sectional garage doors are divided into panels which are hinged together, making them ideal for cyclone-prone areas. As the door opens, sections of the door fold and slide up into the garage ceiling. There are also sliding sectional garage doors where the panels move horizontally rather than vertically. These are usually made of steel and can also be insulated for more energy efficiency.

Side-hinged Garage Doors

Traditional side-hinged garage doors feature two doors which swing open and shut from either side of the opening. These doors can be held open using hooks or catches and they will need room outside to swing fully open. Also known as barn doors, they are often made of wood but can also be made out of galvanised steel. These doors can be less robust in stormy conditions, though.
